NOTE: For the time not on the river, the packs
or duffel bags will be used. While on the river, dry bags will be used instead of the packs or
duffel bags and will be supplied by the outfitter (you may use your own if you
wish). The internal capacity of a pack is about the same as that of a dry bag.
Therefore, if it doesn’t fit in or tie onto the pack or duffel bag, don’t bring
it. Tents and food on the river will be supplied by the outfitter and will not
have to fit in your dry bags. Watch the weight of your gear - 25 to 30 lbs.
maximum. You may have to carry gear short distances even while on the river. Be
sure to bring the garbage bags and ties to double protect sleeping bags and
clothes. Dry bags, especially those supplied by outfitters, are sometimes not
totally dependable.
Synthetic fiber does
not retain water like cotton. In addition, it does not mat down like cotton and
will therefore keep you warmer when wet - something you might appreciate if we
get a cool day. It is a much better choice for use under conditions where you
know you are going to get wet. While I did not include it on the equipment list
because of its cost, polypropylene long underwear is great for cool and wet
conditions. In general, don’t bring any clothing that you would not want to
wear wet for long periods of time. While on the river, you will definitely be
wet.
